Citizens Fight to Save Their Town
Radical Development Threatens Black Diamond and Its Rural Environment
BLACK DIAMOND – In an expression of community dissatisfaction with Black Diamond’s approval of two Master Planned Developments, Toward Responsible Development and several individuals filed an appeal Monday with the Superior Court. The appeal is in opposition to a land use decision that threatens to radically transform the entire area of Black Diamond and adjacent communities. The rural town of Black Diamond is slated to become an urban city of apartments and closely packed houses. These developments will increase the town’s current population from 4,000 to 20,000 by the end of the project. In addition to this poorly thought-‐out plan, the developer hopes to put in over a million square feet of big box and other commercial space in a town where little or no infrastructure exists with which to support it.
Black Diamond is being held responsible for the approval of these plans that if allowed will deface the historic small-‐ town character that currently exists. These developments are in direct violation of the city’s Comprehensive Plan which speaks loudly to its priority of protecting and maintaining the community’s character, preserving the quality of the environment and natural setting, as well as, the need to control the scale of development.
